Behind the Madness

From idea to rough draft to manuscript to book

Through a series of semi-structured interviews, I explored the pornography viewing habits and sexual behaviors of seventeen African-American men between ages 18-24. Expanding on work put forth by Dr. Emily Rothman et al. (2015), targeted questioning allowed me to gage participants’ individual perceptions when viewing pornography, familiarity with salient societal racial stereotypes, and understandings of sexual desires and performance. By utilizing grounded content coding methods, I draw themes from interview responses to capture a better picture of what impacts Black male sexual scripts and behaviors. This research is exploratory and cannot be fully representative of all Black men. Despite this, further research could lead to an indictment of the porn industry and more race-conscious pornographic content.
